A triathlon is a multiple-stage competition involving the completion of three continuous and sequential endurance disciplines. The nature of the sport focuses on persistent and often periodized training in each of the three disciplines, coupled with combination workouts and general strength conditioning. While there are many variations of the sport , the main three disciplines of the sport involves swimming, cycling and running in immediate succession over various distances. Triathletes compete for the fastest overall course completion time, including timed “transitions” between the swim, cycle and run components.
According to the international Triathlon union, the main international race distances are
- Sprint Distance; 750 meter swim, 20 kilometer bike, 5 kilometer run
- Standard distance:1.5 kilometer swim, 40 kilometer bike, 10 kilometer run
Long Course1.9 kilometer swim, 90 kilometer bike, and a 21.1 kilometer run
Fun Fact - Triathlon had its Summer Olympics debut at the 2000 Games, in Sydney and has been contested ever since.
Fun Fact - You know the treadmill at the gym that goes 20 km/hr. max? Try jumping on that for 30 minutes and you are still 53 seconds behind Alistair Brownlee, the current Olympic gold medalist in the men’s triathlon event. His 5 km split was 14:14.

Here are a few tips to get you started.
WHAT TO WEAR
If you are going for a race, you may want to wear what is called a triathlon suit or a triathlon kit (a top/bottom combo) designed to be worn in the swim, the bike and finally the run.
If it’s only your first triathlon and you don’t want to spend too much money, you can just wear a swimsuit.
