Swimming is a water-based sport for all ages. Anyone can pick up swimming easily and one can choose from becoming a recreational swimmer as a way of keeping fit or a competitive swimmer. There is a large interest in swimming in Singapore. In competitive swimming, four major styles have been established. These four strokes are Freestyle (free), Breastroke (breast), Backstroke (back) and Butterfly (fly). Events in competitions could have only one of these styles or they could contain all four (Medley). Competitors often compete in each stroke separately over various distances known as short distance events or long distance events.
Fun Fact - Swimming strengthens the heart and lungs
Fun Fact - Swimming started as a men’s event only in the Olympics but women were able to participate starting in 1912.
The scoring system in swimming is slightly different from many other sports. Sprinting is the only other sport that has a similar scoring system. The goal of competitive swimming is to constantly improve upon one’s time(s) and to beat the competitors in any given event. The winner of a swimming competition is the one with the fastest swim time in the respective stroke and the respective distance.
